The Story

1776. The colonies have challenged the greatest empire on earth, and war has come to Massachusetts. In Marblehead, a fishing town hardened by the cruel Atlantic, three young men answer the call.

Boston Black, an enslaved valet who longs to prove himself. Isaac Morgan, son of a Natick mother, searching for where he belongs. John Rhodes Russell, a privileged son who must earn the trust of the men beside him.

Together they follow the Marblehead regiment through the hope and heartache of the Revolutionary War, and help forge a new America.

The True History

The real Marblehead regiment was the first, and for a long time the only, racially integrated unit in the American military. Its fishermen-soldiers rowed Washington’s army to safety after the Battle of Long Island, then carried it across the icy Delaware on Christmas night, 1776.

Marblehead brings their little-known story to life for a new generation of readers.

Meet the Heroes

  • Boston Black

Enslaved valet to Colonel John Glover. Seen by some as soft, with a cushy job, he aspires to do and be more and looks to prove himself by fighting – something Glover does not want.

  • Isaac Morgan

Private, son of a deceased white father and Natick mother. Like his mother, Isaac is Christian and assimilated, which his tribe challenges. Isaac’s journey opens his world to his full heritage.

  • John Rhodes Russell

White private from a prominent family that promises quick promotion. His trust in his fellow soldiers grows as combat quickly teaches that all men bleed red under enemy fire.
